Boryeong Mud Festival
What: The Boryeong Mud Festival or ‘Mud fest’ celebrates everything great about Mud, with the festival having evolved from aiming to highlight the benefits of mud on skin to a spring break themed mud party, where several large attractions, of course featuring mud, are erected on the coast line of the Korean town of Daecheon.
The mud attractions of course include mud pits and mud pools, but also mud fountains ‚mud massages, mud body painting, a mud prison, mud pools, mud massage zones and a mud-themed concert stage which features both live music, dances and an award for the most muddiest competitor of the festival, which combined with the small local markets selling mud-related cosmetic products and medicines, helps make Daecheon the number one destination for mud.
When: The festival takes place over the last two weeks of July, with the best time to visit being the last weekend of the festival, where not only westernised Koreans visit, but also when the mud is at its highest and the concert line-up is at its best.
Where: The mud festival takes place in Boryeong, in the town of Daecheon. The attractions and mud related activities are spread across both Daecheon Beach and downtown Boryeong area, which is also home to a series of great Korean restaurants and nightclubs.
Duration: The festival takes place over the course of two weeks, with the best activities and events taking place on weekends – the days events usually begin in the morning, when the tour groups ferrying westerns arrive.
Tickets: The festival is divided into ticket free and ticket zones. Tickets cost between 9–10 Euros for a single day pass and can be purchased at: boryeongmudfestival.com/Tickets in advance, alternatively a number of tour groups offer day shuttles and overnight stays.
Need to Know: Accommodation in Boryeong can be difficult to find during the festival so it’s advised to book in advance alongside tickets – it’s recommended to wear cheap clothes, protect valuables, and most importantly be prepared to get muddy !
