Boryeong Mud Festival

What: The Boryeong Mud Fes­ti­val or ‘Mud fest’ cel­e­brates every­thing great about Mud, with the fes­ti­val hav­ing evolved from aim­ing to high­light the ben­e­fits of mud on skin to a spring break themed mud par­ty, where sev­er­al large attrac­tions, of course fea­tur­ing mud, are erect­ed on the coast line of the Kore­an town of Daecheon.

The mud attrac­tions of course include  mud pits and mud pools, but also mud foun­tains ‚mud mas­sages, mud body paint­ing, a mud prison, mud pools, mud mas­sage zones and a mud-themed con­cert stage which fea­tures both live music, dances and an award for the most mud­di­est com­peti­tor of the fes­ti­val, which com­bined with the small local mar­kets sell­ing mud-relat­ed cos­met­ic prod­ucts and med­i­cines, helps make Daecheon the num­ber one des­ti­na­tion for mud.

When: The fes­ti­val takes place over the last two weeks of July, with the best time to vis­it being the last week­end of the fes­ti­val, where not only west­ern­ised Kore­ans vis­it, but also when the mud is at its high­est and the con­cert line-up is at its best.

Where: The mud fes­ti­val takes place in Boryeong, in the town of Daecheon. The attrac­tions and mud relat­ed activ­i­ties are spread across both Daecheon Beach and down­town Boryeong area, which is also home to a series of great Kore­an restau­rants and night­clubs.

Dura­tion: The fes­ti­val takes place over the course of two weeks, with the best activ­i­ties and events tak­ing place on week­ends – the days events usu­al­ly begin in the morn­ing, when the tour groups fer­ry­ing west­erns arrive.

Tick­ets: The fes­ti­val is divid­ed into tick­et free and tick­et zones. Tick­ets cost between 9–10 Euros for a sin­gle day pass and can be pur­chased at: boryeongmudfestival.com/Tickets in advance, alter­na­tive­ly a num­ber of tour groups offer day shut­tles and overnight stays.

Need to Know: Accom­mo­da­tion in Boryeong can be dif­fi­cult to find dur­ing the fes­ti­val so it’s advised to book in advance along­side tick­ets – it’s rec­om­mend­ed to wear cheap clothes, pro­tect valu­ables, and most impor­tant­ly be pre­pared to get mud­dy !
