Calgary Stampede

What: Yee­ha! — The ‘great­est show on earth’ the world famous Cal­gary stam­pede cel­e­brates the best of the Rodeo and mid-west­ern life, with a 10-day spec­tac­u­lar fea­tur­ing the best of rodeo events, musi­cal per­for­mances, work­shops, chuck­wag­on races, shows and parades, with the city of Cal­gary com­ing alive to cel­e­brate, edu­cate and share its cul­ture and her­itage with the world.

Kick­ing off each day with a Pan­cake break­fast, which has become a local insti­tu­tion dur­ing the stam­pede, the one mil­lion peo­ple who attend the stam­pede get to enjoy both the famous fan­tas­tic food (most of which is deep-fried) and enjoy a show­case event in the evening which fea­tures both the best of rodeo ath­letes and an extrav­a­gant­ly long fire­work show – with the stam­pede hav­ing evolved from its begin­nings in 1912 to incor­po­rate the mod­ern day bal­ance of the needs of ani­mal wel­fare’s and to reflect the diver­si­ty of Cal­gary with the desire to cel­e­brate the ‘old west’ – allow­ing every­one to enjoy and unleash their inner cow­boy or cow­girl.

When: The fes­ti­val begins on the first Fri­day of July each year and lasts for exact­ly 10 days.

Where: The Stam­pede takes place at the apt­ly named Stam­pede Park in Cal­gary Cana­da, which is eas­i­ly acces­si­ble by pub­lic trans­port or walk­ing from the down­town Cal­gary area – with the numer­ous out­door shows, fair­ground rides and stands all set up with­in the con­fines of the park.

Dura­tion: The fes­ti­val lasts for 10 days, with each day begin­ning with a pan­cake break­fast and hav­ing ded­i­cat­ed shows, music and rodeos to enjoy, before the grand finale of the evening show and a mas­sive fire­work dis­play.

Tick­ets: Tick­ets are avail­able at: https://www.calgarystampede.com/stampede/admission-and-tickets as well as tick­et­mas­ter – with tick­ets start­ing at $18 for a dai­ly entry for adults – although enjoy­ing the evening show is rec­om­mend­ed as well.

Need to Know: Access to the stam­pede is eas­i­ly found and facil­i­tat­ed through Cal­gary  so it’s advised to arrive by pub­lic trans­port and stay in down­town Cal­gary – and despite being held in Cana­di­an sum­mer, be pre­pared for the occa­sion­al show­er and even hail dur­ing the stam­pede.
