Comic Con
What: Embracing everyone’s inner Geek, the television, film, and comic book extravaganza of Comic-Con, allows fans to not just meet and greet their heroes, but also learn the latest updates from Hollywood and discover the inside information about how cinematic masterpieces and iconic comic books are created.
Attended by hundreds and thousands of people each year, the event has become renowned with cosplay – the act as dressing up as your favourite tv star, comic book character or hero – and features not just the panels of actors, but over the course of it’s four day run pop-up cinema’s showing the classic, costume competitions, media events for fans and the chance to trade or purchase film, television or comic book memorable collectables or souvenirs – as the action packed world or both comes and Hollywood is bought to life.
When: Comic con is held annually each year in the summer – in the months of July or August, with the exact dates varying each year but usually taking place over the last weekend of July.
Where: While Comic-Con events take place all over the world, San Diego is home to both the original and the best event. For those lucky enough to score entry badges, the event booths and panels take place in San Diego Convention hall, with those without still finding a range of pop-up cinemas, museums and activities in the streets and parks next to the convention centre.
Duration: Comic con lasts four days, with entry to the convention hall allowed from 9:30 am to close of play each night which is usually 5:30pm – with the free events outside the convention centre lasting into the late evening.
Tickets: The ticketing process for comic-con is a lottery as hundreds of thousands apply for tickets. For those wishing to attend you must register at the official comic con website [https://www.comic-con.org/cci/2020/athome] and keep a sharp eye on announcements of ticket sales on the website, with tickets starting at $69 for a Thursday, Friday, or Saturday pass and $47 for a Sunday badge or available for a bundle at $250 and limited to 3 per person. Be warned as well that if you live outside the USA, the first tase of Comic-con queuing will be when you pick up your tickets with lines forming round the block at the tickets offices in the days leading up to comic con.
Need to Know: Expect queuing – lost of it. For all its pro’s comic con is not as well organised as it could be, especially when it comes to the panel events with the stars, operating a one in one out policy and anyone leaving heading to the back of the line.
There’s also a lack of healthy meals and sometimes access to water – especially when in the panel rooms, so it’s advised to check the schedule pick your events and bring everything necessary with you for the duration of the day.
