Honen Festival
What: The ‘Penis Festival,’ Japan’s Honen Matsuri festival, held in the small town of Komaki, has been celebrated for the last 1500 years and seeks to bring a good harvest and for those that wish for it fertility — with the good wishes summoned through the parading of a giant wooden 400kg Penis, carved from a cyprees tree, through the streets of Kamaki and then climaxing with a spin around the Tagata jinja shrine.
For those that observe the festival free sake and penis shaped food, lollies, cakes and cookies are handed out by phallus- toting females along the parade route and there is the chance to buy Penis shaped
merchandise – making for an unforgettable experience.
When: The Honen Matsuri festival takes place on the 15th of March every year, beginning with a blessing in the Tagata jinja shrine at 9am.
Where: The festival takes place at the Tagata Jinja shrine in the small city of Komaki which is located north of Nagoya City, once there seek out the shrine and the Penis festival site.
Duration: Honen Matsuri lasts for one day and begins at 9am with a blessing in the Tagata jinja shrine, the penis parade takes place in the road leading to the shrine and typically starts between 2–3 PM – giving a good amount of time to enjoy all the penis related activities in the festival site.
Tickets: Entrance is free for the parade and festival – along with free sake, expect to pay for any Penis related goods or Food though.
