Just for Laughs
What: The king of comedy festivals, Just For Laughs is a two-week spectacle of the worlds finest comedians, with Montreal’s Quartier des spectacles and surrounding comedy clubs and theaters playing host to 2000 free and paid performances each July, which are sure to leave your sides splitting.
The Festival is also represented by the world famous ‘Victor’ mascot (shown on the left), a monster that according to legend haunts and preys on the city of Montreal, with murals of Victor popping up all along the lively streets of Montreal during the festival, which are transformed into a lively, no traffic, hub of activity, celebration and enjoyment as the festival seeks to help attendees laugh their troubles away.
When: The Just for Laughs festival normally takes place on the last week of July, with daily events in the various locations of the festival, including the comedy clubs lasting from noon to midnight.
Where: The festival takes place in Montreal, Canada with the centre of the Just for Laughs festival being in the Quartier des spectacles in downtown Montreal, which is the prime site for the various free events. Events also take place in the numerous comedy clubs and concert halls across Montreal both over the two weeks of the festival and throughout the year.
Duration: Just for laughs takes place over the last two weeks of July, with each day lasting from noon to midnight, with the thousands of shows varying in length from a few minutes to multiple hours, and shows being performed multiple times to give everyone an opportunity to attend and laugh away their troubles.
Tickets: Of the 2000 shows, almost three quarters (around 1500) are completely free of charge to attend and watch – with the premium acts taking place in the evenings in comedy clubs and stage arenas, including the famous Saint-Denis Theatre, requiring tickets.
To attend ticketed shows, the best option is to monitor the appropriately named [hahaha.com] website and subscribe to their updates as to when the line-up of comedians performing at the concert is revealed – from there and once the line-up is revealed for any acts you wish to see you can simply purchase tickets (either single or package deals) on the hahaha website [hahaha.com/en/box-office-montreal-festival-tickets] or from trusted ticketing vendors such as Ticketmaster around one month or so before the festival begins to guarantee attendance – with some of the ticketed shows also offering on the door entry.
Need to Know: A number of streets in downtown Montreal shut down to accommodate the festival, so it’s advised not to plan to attend by Car and expect bustling crowds at the free events and crowded public transportation and a rush on hotel bookings during the duration of the festival.
