Just for Laughs

What: The king of com­e­dy fes­ti­vals, Just For Laughs is a two-week spec­ta­cle of the worlds finest come­di­ans, with Montreal’s Quarti­er des spec­ta­cles and sur­round­ing com­e­dy clubs and the­aters play­ing host to 2000 free and paid per­for­mances each July, which are sure to leave your sides split­ting.

The Fes­ti­val is also rep­re­sent­ed by the world famous ‘Vic­tor’ mas­cot  (shown on the left), a mon­ster that accord­ing to leg­end haunts and preys on the city of Mon­tre­al, with murals of Vic­tor pop­ping up all along the live­ly streets of Mon­tre­al dur­ing the fes­ti­val, which are trans­formed into a live­ly, no traf­fic, hub of activ­i­ty, cel­e­bra­tion and enjoy­ment as the fes­ti­val seeks to help atten­dees laugh their trou­bles away.

When: The Just for Laughs fes­ti­val nor­mal­ly takes place on the last week of July, with dai­ly events in the var­i­ous loca­tions of the fes­ti­val, includ­ing the com­e­dy clubs last­ing from noon to mid­night.

Where: The fes­ti­val takes place in Mon­tre­al, Cana­da with the cen­tre of the Just for Laughs fes­ti­val being in the Quarti­er des spec­ta­cles in down­town Mon­tre­al, which is the prime site for the var­i­ous free events. Events also take place in the numer­ous com­e­dy clubs and con­cert halls across Mon­tre­al both over the two weeks of the fes­ti­val and through­out the year.

Dura­tion: Just for laughs takes place over the last two weeks of July, with each day last­ing from noon to mid­night, with the thou­sands of shows vary­ing in length from a few min­utes to mul­ti­ple hours, and shows being per­formed mul­ti­ple times to give every­one an oppor­tu­ni­ty to attend and laugh away their trou­bles. 

Tick­ets: Of the 2000 shows, almost three quar­ters (around 1500) are com­plete­ly free of charge to attend and watch – with the pre­mi­um acts tak­ing place in the evenings in com­e­dy clubs and stage are­nas, includ­ing the famous Saint-Denis The­atre, requir­ing tick­ets.

Need to Know: A num­ber of streets in down­town Mon­tre­al shut down to accom­mo­date the fes­ti­val, so it’s advised not to plan to attend by Car and expect bustling crowds at the free events and  crowd­ed pub­lic trans­porta­tion and a rush on hotel book­ings dur­ing the dura­tion of the fes­ti­val.
