Koh Pha Ngan Full Moon Party
What: The Infamous full moon party see’s the shores of the idyllic shores of Haad Rin beach on Koh Pha Ngan play host to a monthly ground vibrating, noisy, chaotic alcohol fuelled and simply fun festival-like party under the full moon, as some 10,000 – 30,000 people gather to let their hair down and have a good time.
Unofficially beginning a few days before the official full moon, as party goers begin to trickle onto the boat accessible only island, the beaches and streets of Koh Pha Ngan are lined on the days of the full moon with multiple music venue types, fire dancers, and booths selling all kinds of party accessories, as well as a large supply of cheap alcohol and food – which is enough for even the most ardent partier to keep the party going from dusk till dawn as the full moon is celebrated.
When: The full moon parties take place once a month (on the occasion of the full moon) – although it’s advised to check the exact date at [http://www.fullmoonparty-thailand.com/] as the dates can shift to accommodate local holidays.
Where: The full moon parties take place on the streets and beaches of Haad Rin on the Koh Pha Ngan island.
The island is located in the South of Thailand and the easiest way to get there is from the islands of either Koh Samui and Koh Tao where cheap ferries run daily connecting the islands.
Duration: Officially the full moon party kicks off at dusk and lasts till the late afternoon the next day, with the beaches normally becoming crowded at midnight – 2am (8pm on New Years Eve) and the peak of the party timed to coincide with the rising sun at dawn.
For those staying on the island or arriving early – expect the party atmosphere to kick in a few days before as more and more tourists make their way to the island.
Tickets: There is an official fee to enter the party (100 baht) which is payable on the island itself, with a budget recommended for food and alcohol when attending the party as well.
Expect as well to pay at least 100baht for a taxi / boat to and from the island – with the last boat leaving Koh Samui at 18:30pm on the night of the party and returning to Koh Samui from Koh Pha Ngan at sunrise the next morning.
Need to Know: Unfortunately, alongside the accusations of commercialisation, the party has developed a reputation for being seedy. With it being recommended to not take your valuable with you, bring a copy of your passport, not accept drinks from anyone unknown and above all stay away from any drugs offered to you at the party.
Alongside this it should be noted that there is no dress code for the party, but it is recommended to wear shoes to avoid possible broken glass on the beach and avoid sleeping on the beach if possible.
