Overview:
The most mysterious and unexplained wonder on the planet, the unique Nazca Lines are a series of giant ancient carvings spread across the 80 kilometres of Peru’s Nazca desert. Believed to have been created by the Nazca people sometime between the 1st and 8th century, the carvings, which number more than 800 lines, and 375 various figures, animals and plants some of which stretch for more than 30 miles, making them so vast and large they can only truly be seen from the sky – with the unique carvings baffling archaeologists and explorers for centuries and thanks to their cultural, beauty and unexplained purpose they are a truly special wonder of the world.
Perfectly preserved over centuries, thanks in large to the absence of strong weather patterns in the Nazca desert, the carvings are known to have been created using a series of strings and stakes – painfully mapped out over the Nazca desert centuries ago. However, this is where the understanding of these carvings ends – with their being no accepted established truth as to their purpose – but multiple theories.
The most prominent of these theories is that of a German archaeologist (Reiche) – who after some 40 years of study concluded that the Nazca Lines existed to serve as a calendar – marking the times for harvest, yet others ponder their meaning as being a display of reverence to the Gods – hence the multiple animals and trees carvings, while others attribute them to a simple piece of art designed to reflect the astronomical constellations that hung over the Nazca desert.
Yet despite these theories – and the mystery of the Nazca Lines, what is undeniably is that they are a true marvel and wonder to gaze upon. With the Nazca Lines being best explored by plane – in one of the most unique flights on the planet, as a series of sharp twists and turns help you to take in the full scale and scope of these magnificent carvings from above – as you glide in a small plane for a half hour journey above this magnificent wonder
Alongside this you also have the option to get up close and personal to the carvings – and ponder on their creation and mystery from the ground level, as a specially constructed panoramic viewing tower, which lies on the edge of the Nazca desert lets you take in two of these incredible carvings.
With the tower being just a short way from a series of small mountains that lie on the edge of the Nazca desert – and which can be easily summited for incredible sunset views of the far reaching desert, the Andes mountains and the incredible wonder of the world that is the Nazca Lines.
Where:
You’ll find the Nazca lines tucked within the vast and beautiful Nazca desert – which lies deep withing the Ica, and off the coastal plain of Peru – with the nearest towns being Pisco or Ico along the Peruvian coastline and the Nazca lines lying some 200 miles southeast of the Peruvian capital Lima.
Getting there:
Although mysterious and shrouded in wonder and found deep within the Nazca desert down the southern cost of Peru – the Nazca lines are incredibly accessible from across Peru.
To begin getting there, we’d advise firstly heading to Lima – either via a flight / bus from Cusco after experiencing the wonder of Machu Picchu – or by direct flight, with flights available from across Peru domestically or internationally from around the world.
Having reached Lima, you then have two main options to reach the Nazca lines – and ensure you get the necessary flight over this wonder that gives you the truly special viewing opportunities and photos.
1.) First up – and by far the easiest method – is to book a day tour from Lima to Nazca which includes a flight. Using this method you’ll being by traveling 3–4 hours down the stunning west coast of Peru on the Pan-American highway — with incredible views of the South Pacific Ocean. Having reached Nazca – you’ll then be able to board your own small plane and soar over the incredible carvings of the Nazca lines – with plenty of opportunities to view these unique wonders and snap some stunning shots.
From there you can expect most tours to follow-up with a lunch in a local restaurant and then head over to the viewing platform located off the Nazca desert for a more on the ground look at the tree and the hands carvings – after which it will be back in the tour bus and back along the highway to Lima, for what will have been a simple, no hassle trip to this stunning wonder of the world.
2.) The second option – and for the explorers and budget conscious travellers, is to make your own way from Lima to the Nazca lines to begin your exploration, which is easily done from within Lima by heading to the Javier Prado terminal. From here you have a range of bus options that leave hourly and head to Pisco, Ico and finally the Nazca lines – with the best of the bunch being the Cruz del Sur company – who are reliable and comfortable and offer great views of the Pan-American highway if you get a window seat.
You can expect a bus journey from Lime to Nazca to take anywhere from 4–8 hours depending on the company you go with, and do be warned that there’s no official bus stop in Nazca – so you may get dropped off at a roundabout on the edge of the city.
Having got yourself to Nazca, you can then make your way to the small but charming Nazca airport to board a self-pre-booked flight that will see you soar over the Nazca Lines – giving you a view of their full scale, scope and beauty.
Following the flight – and with the freedom to explore having arrived by bus, you can then make your own way to the viewing platform to take in the nearby carvings, before heading to the top of the small mountains nearby – and after summiting to the top sitting back and spending an incredible hour or so watching the Nazca desert light up in a kaleidoscope of deep rouge colours over the beautiful Nazca lines below – before it’s back on the bus to Lima.
Best time to Visit:
While the Nazca lines remain open and are visible all year round – we’d advise avoiding the wet season – where sudden downpours can make flights inaccessible and leave you drenched in the desert – really taking the edge off your experience.
So for this reason we’d really advise visiting during Peru’s dry season – which takes place between July and October – with our pick of the months being September, where the Desert will be warm but not too hot – and you’ll get to enjoy clear blue skies and an incredible sunset over the Nazca lines.
For the Nazca lubes themselves – and when visiting we’d really recommend getting your flight booked in as early as possible during the day. While it may mean an early start you’ll be treated to better views of the carvings and clearer skies – as well as a more enjoyable flight as the twists and turns of the long flight aren’t felt on a full stomach.
