Niagara Falls
Overview:
One of the most famous and beautiful waterfalls on the planet, the majestic natural wonder of Niagara Falls rightly earns it’s title as the “Honeymoon Capital of the World” as the stunning falls that intersect the American and Canadian borers see’s hundreds of gallons of water a second cascade into the gorgeous Niagara River below for a truly awe-inspiring and majestic sight and one of the worlds greatest natural wonders.
Believed to have been formed some 12,000 years ago, Niagara Falls is made up of three main waterfalls; the colossal Canadian Horseshoe falls, and the American and Bridal Veil Falls which sit on the American Side of the falls – with the water that plunges over the 200-foot drop into the Niagara River below serving as Drinking water, fuelling a Hydro-power generator and of course being a spot for adrenaline activities.
Officially being the second largest falls on the planet – behind the incredible wonder of the Victoria Falls – Niagara Falls is not only a honeymoon hotspot but has also featured in a range of television and movies – with the most popular one undoubtedly being it’s starring role in the US version of the tv show the office — and is easily accessed and explored from both sides, with their being a range of walks that allow you to get up close (and wet!) to feel the power of the fall, a series of stunning observation points to give you panoramic views of the falls and of course the famous and iconic boat rides of the maid in the mist and voyage beyond the falls – which allow waterproof poncho wearing explorers to get up close and personal to truly experience the majestic and natural wonder of the world that is Niagara Falls.
Where:
Niagara Falls is not only a stunning natural wonder, but also one that is uniquely located – as the cascading waterfall crosses the border between Canada and American – with the two towns that border the Falls on either side both being called Niagara Falls – known as Niagara Falls Ontario and Niagara Falls, New York.
The waterfalls that make up the wonder are more defined in terms of location, with the colossal and stunning Horseshoe falls being located largely in Canada and the America Falls and Bridal Veil Falls being found on the American side.
Getting there:
Given Niagara Falls location in two countries there’s a range of option to reach it from either side.
From the American Side, the most easiest is to fly into the Buffalo-Niagara International Airport which is well serviced by regular flights and then hop on one of the many Niagara Falls shuttles from the airport – with the Buffalo Airport shuttle or Niagara Falls Taxi both being great option to drop you off at the start of the Niagara National State Park.
From the Canadian Side the major airport is the Hamilton International Airport that sits around 40 miles from Niagara Falls – with there again being a range of shuttle services available to ferry you to the Canadian side of the falls straight from the airport. Additionally, from the Canadian side you have the option to fly into the major hub of Toronto at the Toronto Pearson International Airport or the John C. Munro Hamilton International Airport for which both will require a self-drive trip to the falls after a day or two exploring Toronto.
For those already based within America or Canada you of course have the option to self-drive to the falls – which is a great and enjoyable road trip option. For those without a car there are also a range of public transport options to get to Niagara Falls – with the most popular one being a trip on Amtrak Train.
Leaving from Toronto or New York, there is officially no direct train to Niagara falls, instead you’ll need to hop on the Toronto-New York Maple Leaf Train and wait for the train to make a brief 15 minute stop at Niagara Falls on it’s route to or from New York – where you can jump off at a train station just outside Niagara and then make a short trek to the start of the state park that takes you to the wonder.
For those who want a more direct yet also cheap and public transport route you have the option to jump on the incredibly efficient Greyhound service from inside either country – expect fares to set you back $10 Usd and the journey to be a little bit cramped but from inside either country regular services are available to the towns of either Niagara Falls Ontario or Niagara Falls New York.
Best time to Visit:
As a natural wonder Niagara Falls is open and viewable year-round, but you’ll find a series of major attractions – including the two famous boat tours the maid in the mist on the American side and the Canadian Voyage beyond the falls only operating seasonally during the months of May – October.
As you’ll find the summer months – namely July and August a popular time for Niagara Falls thanks both to the warm weather and the summer holidays, which in turn pushes up Hotel Prices around the area, we’d advise timing your visit between the months of May – June or September – October where you’ll be able to enjoy warm weather at the wonder but also get a chance to take on one or both of the iconic boat tours that really do make a trip to Niagara Falls and which give you the best experience to explore the wonder up close.
For those who have no other option that to visit in the winter and off peak months, we’d advise wrapping up warm and also timing your visit for New Years eve – when Niagara Falls hosts a New Years Eve part to rival that of the Famous Time Square New Years Eve celebration – with a series of epic firework displays, music and cheer to ring in the new year.
Explore:
As one of the greatest Waterfalls – and one of the most romantic spots – on the planet, there’s no shortage of viewing opportunities and experiences to observe and soak in the stunning beauty of Niagara Falls – from both the Canadian and American side.
While the falls clock in at an incredible 170 foot at its deepest section and see’s more than 600,000 gallons of water a second cascade into the pool below at it’s most flowing section, Niagara Falls is commonly divided into three distinct and beautiful sections; the colossal Canadian Horseshoe Falls (2200 foot) – and features the famous horseshoe shape of Niagara, and the American Falls (188 foot) and Bridal Veil falls (50 foot) – which are found past a small island which is being slowly eroded away be the falls.
With a storied history and now serving far reaching communities with electricity and water there is something for everyone at the falls, whether that be getting up close to them on the famous boat rides, journeying through the falls to feel their sheer power or simply taking in this stunning natural wonder from one of the viewpoints to witness a stunning sunset and night time illusions from either side of the falls.
So in particularly order the below are our top highlights to see the wonder of Niagara falls on either the Canadian or American side and some quick advice about how to see the wonder from both continents, from an ariel view and to enjoy the incredible illuminations and fireworks above this stunning wonder.
Canadian Side:
Found on the Ontario border in Canada and sitting close to the major Canadian city of Toronto you’ll find the majority of the colossal Horseshoe falls – the major waterfall of Niagara nestled within Canada, with the Canadian side also offering stunning and panoramic views of the falls and giving those all important beauty photo spots.
With safe accommodation that gives stunning views of the falls the stunning Canadian Horseshoe falls – which plummets 188 foot into the Niagara River below, the Canadian side can be explored in a number of ways:
Journey Behind the Falls – an alternative to the famous maid of the mist which runs from the American side of the falls, Journey behind the falls is a walkable attraction that takes you up close and personal to the Horseshoe Falls – and lets you feel and experience the power of the falls up close – luckily though you are provided with a waterproof poncho to protect you against the falls mist.
Taking you behind the falls, the journey is bookable online in advance (which we’d advise as queues do form at the ticket office) the entire journey takes around 45 minutes and begins with an elevator ride and green screen photo session as you then descend to roughly one third of the way down the falls where you can stand behind the falls as they cascade down.
From here you can take on two observation decks – one higher and lower at the foot of the falls for sweeping views of the Horseshoe falls and the Niagara River and grab incredible photos of this true wonder of the world.
Voyage to the Falls — Hornblower Cruise — The Canadian equivalent of the famous American side Maid of the Mist boat tour, the Voyage to the Falls cruise is a stunning boat expedition that takes you through the Niagara river and right up close to the Horseshoe falls, the American falls and the bridal falls – giving you the chance to get as close as possible to this wonderful natural wonder.
An equally stunning trip to the wonder, the voyage to the falls has one key advantage over the maid in the mist equivalent – it is less known and thus less busy – with tickets available online and at the kiosks regularly, and for those who worry about getting wet you’ll be given a custom red waterproof poncho that will shield you from the worst spray of the falls – although you can still expect to get wet !
Offering stunning views – and a lower and upper deck – it’s quite common to see marriages taking place at the stern of the Voyage to the falls boat – with the cruise offering a trip up close and personal to the romantic and beautiful natural wonder of Niagara Falls.
White Water Walk – A great spot for stunning panoramic views of the falls without getting wet, the white-water walk is the best walk at Niagara Falls and lets you take an elevator down to the base of the falls before you take on an hours walk along a serene boardwalk to take in the same up close views offered by the journey to the falls.
A great chance to walk parallel to the wonder, the white water walk also allows takes you to a series of off the beaten track observation points and multiple angles on the falls, from where you can snap stunning photos. A great place to come at sunset or in the evening to witness the beauty of the falls the white water walk is a really great option for those who want to explore some unique spots of the falls while taking a leisurely walk alongside the Niagara River.
American Side:
Considered the home of Niagara Falls, the American side features not just the stunning American Falls part of Niagara – which clocks in at 188 feet in height – but if you take a small trip across the nearby Goat Island (not home to any known Goats) you’ll also come to the smaller but stunning falls of Bridal Falls – with the American side also offering a range of unique ways to explore the wonder as well as incredible viewpoints and beautiful exploration points.
Considered a marriage and honeymoon hotspot, we’d advise to be careful when approaching the American side as some of the areas around Buffalo and the town can be unsafe, but if you keep your wits about you the American Side offers some unique and truly stunning ways to see this incredible wonder:
Cave of the Winds: Accessible from the foot of the American Falls which you an find by walking around Niagra National Park and crossing onto Goat Island, the Cave of the winds is an easily accessed and truly awe-inspiring experience – as you descend an elevator some 200 feet down and walk through the caves of the Falls to the base of the Bridal Veil Falls.
From here it’s a wet experience! – so be sure to bring a waterproof poncho as you take a boardwalk right up and close to the Bridal Veil Falls where you can feel and hear the immense power of the smallest of the big three falls of Niagara come crashing down.
As you journey along the boardwalk you’ll come to one of the most stunning viewing spots in the whole of Niagara – the Hurricane Deck of Cave of the winds – a unique platform from where you can feel the spray of the falls on your face– it’s a truly magical and albeit timed spot – and one we’d recommend booking in advance for and bringing your camera for an up close and personal experience of the wonder of the world.
Niagara Falls Observation Tower - A premium spot for photos and sweeping views of the wonder, the Niagara Falls Observation Tower is the only place around the falls from where you can get panoramic views of all threes cascading down into the Niagara River below – a truly magical spot.
Alongside offering panoramic views, the Observation Towe is also an architectural feat, as it extends out over the Gorge of Niagara to allow visitors to truly experience an unparalleled view and get a parallel view of the wonder. You will have to climb a couple of stairs to move through the complex but it’s well worth it for the stunning views and chance to stand above the falls with the wonder in front of you. Alongside this, the Observation Tower also the entrance point for the most famous of Niagra’s attractions, the incredible Maid of the Mist Tour.
Maid of the Mist – Operating seasonally between May – October the maid of the mist is the iconic experience at Niagara Falls and is a stunning boat ride that takes you from the observation point across the Niagara River up close and personal to all three of the stunning falls of Niagara — for a truly unforgettable experience.
Lasting approximately 30 minutes, explorers will board the boat and be given a complimentary and much needed blue waterproof poncho and then set sail towards the falls in front of you – which come closer and close to view as you cross the rivers of Niagara. As you head towards the wonder, you’ll begin to experience the power of the falls as the boat begins to rock from side to side and you feel the spray of the falls against your face.
A unique yet popular spot for weddings – especially thanks to the prominence gained in the tv show the American Office – the Maid in the Mist is the longest running boat tour at Niagara since 1846, and still retains its unique charm offering explorers a chance to get truly personal with the falls and experience the immense power of this incredible wonder up close – definitely one not to be missed at Niagara!
Niagara Falls State Park – Officially America’s oldest state park, Niagara Falls state park is a unique spot in itself as well as serving as the entrance point to falls from the American side.
Offering some charming greens scenery, we’d advise to put aside some time at the park to walk along the boulevard that surrounds the edge of the park from where you can snap some stunning photos of the falls from a distance – as well as taking on a biking trail around the park where you can feel and experience the excimtent of the falls as you journey round the park.
The entrance point for the American highlights, including the observation tower the park also features a series of traditional American attractions including a ferris wheel and a cinema, but perhaps most importantly it’s a great spot to come in the evening to see the illumination and fireworks of Niagara Falls in the evening.
From Either side:
While each side of Niagara Falls offers stunning views and a chance to get up close and personal with the falls, there is also a range of activities available from either side and between them – which can offer both unique opportunities to experience the wonder and a great chance to see an incredible wonder of the world from and between two countries:
See the falls at night: Starting with an overlook attraction of the falls, you’ll find Niagara Falls lit up with an impressive light show every single day of the year between 9pm and midnight during summer and between 8pm and 2am during winter – with hundreds of LED lights coming together to create a truly stunning spectacle that illuminates the wonder.
Often illuminated in the shape of political or charitable causes, the lights are easily viewed from the national parks – or from hotels based in the town of Niagara on the Canadian side and offer a great way to view and photograph the beauty of the wonder against the backdrop of the sparkling evening moon.
Fireworks: Alongside the illumination Niagara Falls is also home to a nightly summertime firework spectacular – where during every evening between June – October the night sky over Niagara lights up for 15 minutes with an incredible free firework show.
Viewable from multiple vantage points, the firework show above the falls is truly special and can be seen and heard for miles around as the wonder is lit up – for a bit of a bonus we’d advise to both bring a solid camera and jump on an evening fireworks cruise to get truly special photos of the fireworks.
Helicopter tours: Alongside the boat rides, hikes and vantage points offered to explore Niagara Falls, there’s an even more adrenaline fuelled way of getting a birds eye and panoramic view of this wonder – a helicopter tour.
Available from either side of the falls, you can expect to pay anywhere from $150 Usd upwards for a half hour tour that will take you past the Niagara Hydropower station and to each of the stunning falls before pulling back to give a true panoramic view of the wonder.
One not for the light-hearted and an experience that will no doubt put a dent in your wallet a helicopter tour over Niagara Falls is a true bucket list experience and one of the best ways to experience the incredible wonder of Niagara falls.
Crossing the border: For the ultimate experience at Niagara Falls and to experience the best of both sides you’ll want to cross the border to either side for a unique chance to explore and view the wonder from two different countries.
To do this there are three main bridge crossings into the other side of the falls – with the one being the 1940’s Rainbow bridge that takes visitors across either side – and is bikeable, hike able or allows visitors to drive across it.
Free to cross from the US Side to Canada and costing $1 Usd for the reverse route if hiking across it (which rises to $4 USD if going over by car), be sure to carry a form of ID if attempting to cross the bridge and forms of both American and Canadian currency and have your paperwork in order as this is an official border crossing.
But with the admin details sorted and the correct change in hand, a walk across the rainbow bridge is a truly stunning and recommended experience as you stand between two countries and then cross the border with the beauty of Niagara Falls to your side and continue your exploration of the true wonder of the world that is Niagara Falls.
How long to stay:
Thanks to its easy accessibility it’s entirely possible to get to Niagara Falls and back in a day from most central and East case American states — and from Montreal and Ontario on the Canadian side.
But while a day trip will allow you to take in the main highlights, snap some stunning photos and take on one of the boat tours if you’re in season – we’d advise allocating 2 days and 1 night for a trip to Niagara which will give you enough chance to take in the falls from both the American and Canadian side and catch the stunning fireworks and illuminations over the wonder in the evening – which is a truly awe-inspiring sight.
Top Tip:
For those visiting from the US Side in Buffalo be warned that the area’s around Niagara are not considered safe and are unfortunately rife with social problems including regular violence and drugs so we’d advise to always be on your guard when visiting from the US Side and be sure to keep valuable and possessions with you and out of sight and to avoid venturing into the city centre and catching public transport if possible.
On a more positive note, for those who want to trek into the other country and cross the rainbow bridge, be sure to bring cash with you in both US and Canadian Dollar and check visa requirements beforehand – it is normally waved if you’re going for the day but it’s worth doublechecking.
For those taking on the maid of the mist, Journey behind the falls or who fancy a potter along the Terrain walkway be sure to come prepared with a waterproof poncho and a pair of flip flops or a spare pair of socks – the socks in particularly are often overlooked as the rain poncho’s don’t offer feet protection – and continuing to explore the wonder with wet feet won’t be fun.
We’d also advise planning an overnight stay, specifically so you can catch the incredible fireworks and night time illusion for a truly different and beautiful way to see the falls – and finally be warned that you can’t swim in Niagara Falls despite whatever daredevils (idiots) you may see attempting it in the past – the water is cold, powerful and deep and carries with it a strong risk of death – so it’s best avoided.
Cost:
Niagara Falls is a national park on both the US and Canadian Side – so access to the park is free year round !
So your main costs will come from both getting there for which you have a range of affordable optioans from as little as $5usd by bus to $400 Usd by flight within the US and for accommodation in Toronto (which we’d recommend as an overnight stop) or Buffalo to give you a chance to see the beautiful falls light up and the nightly firework show – and we’d recommend budgeting around $80 USD a night for a decent hotel room.
You’ll also have the option to take on some of the experiences offered on either side – including the highly recommended Journey behind the falls on the Canadian Side – which comes in at $13 CA and the White Water Walk along the stunning Parkway which again starts at $13 – both of which we’d recommend to get up close and personal to the falls from the more scenic and beautiful Canadian side.
For those visiting on the American Side you’ll find the cave of the winds tour coming in a little more expensive at $17 and the maid of the mist costing $18 Usd – and for both we’d strongly advise booking in advance on the Niagara Falls website as tickets are known to sell out during the peak season in advance.
For those with a bigger budget and who want a literal birds eye view of the falls you have the option of a helicopter tour over the falls. These tours are also popular and last for 30 minutes including prep, take off and a journey to watch the falls in full flight from above – and you can expect prices to start from $150 Usd on either side of the borer a tad pricy but a definite once in a lifetime experience to see the falls.
Accounting as well for the rainbow bridge crossing – that will set you back $4 Usd in a car – and a spot of food and minus the cost of getting there and a helicopter flight – both of which are really up to travellers to set, we’d advise budgeting around $200 Usd to see the full highlights and true wonder of the world that is Niagara Falls.
Fun Fact:
Alongside being a source of drinking water and hydro-power generation, the splendid Niagara Falls is not only the second largest falls in the world – but also the most ‘romantic’ with the falls being a popular honeymoon and wedding destination – with the falls being used for this exact purpose on the popular American version of the office.
Best photo spot:
There’s no denying that Niagara Falls is exceptionally photogenic – especially if you catch just after a shower when a series of rainbows appear over the wonder and reflect back against the cascading falls into the river below.
While there are many good spots to grab a photo, we’d recommend heading to Observation Tower on the US side – where you can capture a panoramic shot of the whole of the falls at once from a height some 200 feet in the air – for an immense shot both during the day and the night-time.
For those who want a bit of a closer (wet !) experience then we’d advise you head to the Terrain walkway – where you cannot not only feel the full immense power of the falls cascading down but also capture some stunning sunset and night time photos – with the USA side of the falls in particular known to be stunning from this vantage point.
For the adrenaline seekers who want truly stunning views we’d also recommend taking on either a helicopter tours – where you can get a unique and literal birds eye view over the incredible views – or either the maid of the mist or Journey behind the falls tour where you can get absolute incredible photos up close and personal to the true and beautiful wonder of the world that is Niagara Falls.
