Nyepi & Ogoh-ogoh Parade
What: sshhh! – Nyepi is the annual day of silence primarily celebrated on the island of the gods in Bali where on the 3rd day of the 6 day New year Celebration the entire island comes to a silent standstill with roads, airports, restaurants and even electricity closed to allow for prayer, reflection and the purifcaiton of the mind, body and soul.
In the days preceding Nyepi several celebrations and ceremonies are held including the Ogoh, Ogoh parade in which 20 foot bamboo statues of demons are paraded through the streets of Bali, in an attempt to draw them out, with Nyepi serving as a way to banish them with their being no signs of life on the island.
Following the observation of Nyepi further celebrations including a yoga day are held to mark the coming of the New year.
When: Nyepi takes place in line with the Lunar Calendar on the firstday of the Spring equinox which typically falls in late march, with the Ogoh-Ogoh parade taking place the day prior to Nyepi.
Where: Nyepi is observed primarily on the island of Bali, although the day of silence is also observed in other countries on either the same day or the 12th of March.
Duration: Nyepi lasts for a full 24 hours during which the entire island of Bali falls silent.
Tickets: No admission fees are required for Nyepi of the Ogoh Ogoh festival.
Need to Know: There is no access to restaurants or shops during Nyepi so stock up in advance, also be aware of no check ins / check outs at hotels and no outgoing or incoming flights.
