Roskilde Music festival
What: The ‘Community Music Festival’ the Danish music festival of Roskilde features not just 175 bands and the best of food, parties, mud and art, but also a strong emphasis on togetherness, spirituality and community as the non-profit charity organisation behind it ensure that funds raised by Roskilde go to assist young and vulnerable children.
From its inception in 1971, the week long festival, which always features extended sets from established Rock, Jazz and Soul acts alongside new comers across 8 stages, has hosted some 120,000 people who camp out in a field outside of the Danish capital of Copenhagen and help transform the small rural town of Roskilde into a small city – which features, showers, a supermarket and most importantly for festival goers – wifi hot spots !
When: The Roskilde Music festival (pre-covid) takes place on the last weekend of June and lasts for a full week normally to the first weekend of July – with the campaign areas opening on the Saturday of the festival and the musical events beginning with newcomers on the day of the opening of the festival, before the more established acts begin on the Wednesday – be sure to keep an eye out for and participate in the naked run on the Wednesday, where the winner bags a free ticket to the event the following year.
Where: Unsurprisingly the Roskilde Music festival takes place in the Danish town of Roskilde, in a festival site (field) about 35km outside the Danish capital of Copenhagen – with the festival site then divided into 8 main stages and a small community featuring everything a festival goer could ever wish for. For those who are looking to only attend one day of the concert the option to commute from Copenhagen is available – giving you the chance to catch the festival and return to a warm bed.
Tickets: Tickets for the festival are available as single day tickets or a full week – with full day tickets coasting $360 USD and including a space on the campsite and single day tickets costing $180 USD – all tickets are available for purchase on the official Roskilde Music festival website (https://www.roskilde-festival.dk/en/tickets/) – and be warned fake tickets or people entering the camp site will be dealt huge fines !
Duration: The festival officially lasts for a week – with the camp site opening up to visitors on the Saturday before the festival, and the main acts beginning on the Wednesday. What sets Roskilde Music festival aside from other festivals is the length of each act, with acts required to play a minimum of an hour and the larger more established acts expected to last at least 90 minutes.
Need to Know: There is an emphasis on environmentalism at the festival – so don’t pack your own generators, drones or stereos – and people with drugs especially will be referred to the police. Other than the Roskilde Music festival is a fun filled event with multiple options for attending and something for everything – making it one of the best music festivals on the planet !
