Roskilde Music festival

What: The ‘Com­mu­ni­ty Music Fes­ti­val’ the Dan­ish music fes­ti­val of Roskilde fea­tures not just 175 bands and the best of food, par­ties, mud and art, but also a strong empha­sis on togeth­er­ness, spir­i­tu­al­i­ty and com­mu­ni­ty as the non-prof­it char­i­ty organ­i­sa­tion behind it ensure that funds raised by Roskilde go to assist young and vul­ner­a­ble chil­dren.

From its incep­tion in 1971, the week long fes­ti­val, which always fea­tures extend­ed sets from estab­lished Rock, Jazz and Soul acts along­side new com­ers across 8 stages, has host­ed some 120,000 peo­ple who camp out in a field out­side of the Dan­ish cap­i­tal of Copen­hagen and help trans­form the small rur­al town of Roskilde into a small city – which fea­tures, show­ers, a super­mar­ket and most impor­tant­ly for fes­ti­val goers – wifi hot spots !

When: The Roskilde Music fes­ti­val (pre-covid) takes place on the last week­end of June and lasts for a full week nor­mal­ly to the first week­end of July – with the cam­paign areas open­ing on the Sat­ur­day of the fes­ti­val and the musi­cal events begin­ning with new­com­ers on the day of the open­ing of the fes­ti­val, before the more estab­lished acts begin on the Wednes­day – be sure to keep an eye out for and par­tic­i­pate in the naked run on the Wednes­day, where the win­ner bags a free tick­et to the event the fol­low­ing year.

Where: Unsur­pris­ing­ly the Roskilde Music fes­ti­val takes place in the Dan­ish town of Roskilde, in a fes­ti­val site (field) about 35km out­side the Dan­ish cap­i­tal of Copen­hagen – with the fes­ti­val site then divid­ed into 8 main stages and a small com­mu­ni­ty fea­tur­ing every­thing a fes­ti­val goer could ever wish for. For those who are look­ing to only attend one day of the con­cert the option to com­mute from Copen­hagen is avail­able – giv­ing you the chance to catch the fes­ti­val and return to a warm bed.

Tick­ets: Tick­ets for the fes­ti­val are avail­able as sin­gle day tick­ets or a full week – with full day tick­ets coast­ing $360 USD and includ­ing a space on the camp­site and sin­gle day tick­ets cost­ing $180 USD – all tick­ets are avail­able for pur­chase on the offi­cial Roskilde Music fes­ti­val web­site (https://www.roskilde-festival.dk/en/tickets/) – and be warned fake tick­ets or peo­ple enter­ing the camp site will be dealt huge fines !

Dura­tion: The fes­ti­val offi­cial­ly lasts for a week – with the camp site open­ing up to vis­i­tors on the Sat­ur­day before the fes­ti­val, and the main acts begin­ning on the Wednes­day. What sets Roskilde Music fes­ti­val aside from oth­er fes­ti­vals is the length of each act, with acts required to play a min­i­mum of an hour and the larg­er more estab­lished acts expect­ed to last at least 90 min­utes.

Need to Know: There is an empha­sis on envi­ron­men­tal­ism at the fes­ti­val – so don’t pack your own gen­er­a­tors, drones or stere­os – and peo­ple with drugs espe­cial­ly will be referred to the police. Oth­er than the Roskilde Music fes­ti­val is a fun filled event with mul­ti­ple options for attend­ing and some­thing for every­thing – mak­ing it one of the best music fes­ti­vals on the plan­et !
