Royal Ascot Horse Racing
What: The best of British horse racing, Royal Ascot combines British civility and elegance with the excitement of Horse Racing as the famous race course plays host to 36 races spread over 5 days as the best horses in the world compete for over £8 million in prize money in the famed King George VI, Queen Elizabeth races and the prized royal Ascot gold Cup.
Combined with this are the strict dress code, which requires everyone to look their best, the daily royal procession and singing of the British ‘God Save the Queen’ national anthem as the royal family enters the arena which begins each race day, and the traditional partaking in gambling and champagne which helps to make Royal Ascot races one of Britain’s and the world’s favourite racing events.
When: The Royal Ascot races take place for 5 days beginning on a Tuesday in the middle of June.
Where: The Royal Ascot racecourse is based in Ascot, near Windsor and is accessible by public transport from London.
Duration: The races at Royal Ascot last for 5 days, with each day having a celebrated theme. The royal procession, which sees the singing of the national anthem and the entrance of the royal family, takes place at 2pm each day, with the first race starting at 2:30pm and the last race at 5:35pm, with the day finishing with another sing-a-long of the national anthem.
Tickets: Tickets for both the paddocks and seats are available at https://tickets.ascot.co.uk/connect/Webpages/Ascot/WhatsOn.aspx with ticket prices costing between £25 to £85 – although tickets to the Royal Enclosure are unfortunately strictly limited (you need to be vouched for by a Royal or occupant) so unfortunately a chat with the Queen is off limits.
Need to Know: The dress code is strictly enforced with spectators required to be dressed in their best or risking refusing entry and it’s advised that if attending in the paddocks to arrive early to secure a good spot.
More Information: The official royal ascot website (https://www.ascot.co.uk/) contains all the information about the races, horses and ticket purchasing.
