St. Patricks Day Festival
What: Celebrating everything great about Ireland, the famous St Patricks Day festival see’s the whole of Ireland turn green, as the country indulges in Guinness and food and plays host to a series of music performances, community events and a stunning street parade in remembrance and celebration of its most famous saint.
Although according to legend Saint Patrick both introduced Christianity to Ireland and was responsible for driving out the snakes, modern day celebrations tend to be more carnival in their nature, with the parties in Dublin beginning in anticipation five days prior to the day of St Patrick and the day itself featuring an all star morning parade, before friends and family gather in the many pubs in Dublin temple street to toast and celebrate both St Patrick and the republic of Ireland.
When: St Patricks Day is celebrated on the 17th March – which is the believed date of death of St Patrick – with performances and celebrations taking place in the five days prior to the day itself.
Where: Celebrations of St Patrick take place globally – with most involving the over consumption of Guinness, however for the real experience head to Dublin, Ireland – with the parade taking place on O’Connell street and the best place to enjoy a Guinness being The Temple Bar area.
Duration: St Patricks day lasts for one day, (not including any hangover the next day) with the build up and a variety of concerts taking place across Ireland in the five days prior to the festival.
For the day itself the must-see parade which takes place along O’Connell street and finishes at St Patricks Cathedral begins at 11am, with watchers encouraged to arrive at at least 10am to secure a good watching position, you can also expect pubs to fill up early in the afternoon and stay open well into the early hours.
Tickets: No tickets are required to witness the parade in Dublin on St Patricks day or to visit the Pubs in the area, however it’s encouraged to keep an eye on your bar bill and for accommodation and travel prices to soar closer to the day – for those wishing to tour the Guinness brewery a charge of €25 applies, with slots for a tour filling up months in advance for tours on St Patricks day.
Need to Know: Wear Green! — If visiting Dublin for the festival it’s advised to book accommodation well in advance and get a spot early in the morning to witness the parade.
