Sundance Film Festival
What: The largest independent film festival in the United States, the Sundance film festival celebrates the best of independent film as hundreds of thousands of cinema buffs , film makers, critics and budding directors head to three small towns in Utah for a 10 day marathon of film premieres, panels, conversations, parties and the chance to discover the latest cinematic masterpiece.
With a strict criterion that any film premiered at the festival is independently produced and directed, the festival is open to films of all genres, with documentaries, biopics, short films, series, and New Frontier films all premiered and with no criteria on who can submit a film for consideration for the festival [see here] there’s no reason why, with the right story to tell, anyone can’t go on to garner international and critical acclaim for their film.
When: The Sundance film festival takes place over the course of 10 days beginning in late January and ending in early February.
Where: The sundance film festival takes place in the state of Utah – in the towns of park city, salt lake city and at the sundance resort, with a series of selected small venues in each of the three towns showing the independent fils of the festival. Duration: The film festival lasts 10 days, with film premieres and screenings taking place at various times throughout the day with a full list of film premieres at their various theatres available at [https://www.sundance.org/2020-sundance-film-festival-schedule] – expect films to last anywhere between 5 minutes to a few hours.
Tickets: Tickets for the film festival are available at [https://www.sundance.org/festivals/sundance-film-festival/get-tickets] with ticket prices costing $20 per film and including access to an after-premiere film panel. There are also a range of passes for multiple day screenings, with these passes starting at $1000 and raising in price to $3000.
It’s highly advised to book in advance as only an estimated 20% of tickets go to film fans and producers and demand for tickets available to the public far outstripping the availability of tickets.
Need to Know: The festival is spread across three separate sites, which are approximately half an hour apart from each other so plan your screenings well in advance – for those without cars a free shuttle is on hand to ferry people to the three different sites.
It’s also advised to register and book tickets well in advance, and if lucky enough to attend bring a good supply of winter clothes for the Utah winters.
