What The worlds biggest tango festival – the Tango festival of Buenos Aires is not only a celebration of Argentine culture and tango, but is a combination of the best two tango events on the planet as the nine day La Festival — which features numerous shows, instruction, performances, recitals, classes and screenings for the public– is combined with the biggest international tango competition the Mundial de Tango where the finest tango dancers battle it out to be crowned tango champion.
Taking place across numerous locations in the city, the la festival part of the Tango festival is aimed at people of all abilities – from those with two left feet to the seasoned professional – and best of all, all the classes, shows and screenings taking place during la festival are completely free of charge, showcasing Tango’s ability to not just let people let loose and express themselves, but embody the history, life, sensuality and passion of the argentine people and live up to Argentina’s reputation as the ‘home of tango.’
When: The tango festival takes place over the course of 16 days beginning in the middle of August and lasting until the last weekend in August, with the la festival element lasting nine days and the official competition and finals of Mundial de Tango lasting seven days, culminating in two final events to crown the Mundial de Tango champions in freestyle and choreographed dance.
Where: The Tango festival takes place in Buenos Aires, Argentina – with the events of la festival spread across 42 venues in the city, so chances are you’ll run into an event wherever you go!
But the established classes and dance events take place for la festival in the famous local neighborhoods including Centro Cultural and the Usina del Arte, with the official competition and finals of Mundial de Tango taking place in the Luna Park stadium.
Duration: The festival lasts for 16 days officially, with the la festival element lasting 9 days and the Mundial de Tango event lasting 7 days.
For classes in la festival they typically last an hour, but can go on for multiple hours depending on the dances, instructions and performances being given, for the finals of Mundial de Tango the final event for freestyle dance will take place on the second to last day of the festival and last all day, and the final for choreographed dance will take place on the last day of the festival.
Tickets: All events in the la festival part of the festival are completely free ! – all you have to do to sign up for the classes, to give a performance or to show off your tango skills is register online at the official festival website at [http://festivales.buenosaires.gob.ar/tangofestivalymundial/es/home]. Although we’d recommend splashing out a little on a dance outfit at one of the venues to both make sure you look the part and support the event.
For the Mundial de Tango there is again free admission to the qualifying rounds of the tournament, on a first come first serve basis until the venue reaches capacity, for the finals tickets must be reserved on the online site above on a first come basis and one ticket per person, which can be collected on the day of the show at Luna park – or you can chance turning up on the day and hoping the venue has not reached capacity.
