The Great Food Festival
What: The favorite festival of ‘foodies’ Singapore’s Great food festival see’s more than 50 of the worlds greatest chefs descend onto Sentosa Island in the little red dot and showcase hundreds of their best dishes for as little as $10 a pop, with international and local delights on offer from Michelin Star chefs and Singapore’s best restaurants in the ‘Star Chef Arena,’ deserts and pastries available for those with a sweet tooth in the ‘Rollin’ Sweet Times’ section, sample worldwide heritage food down Heritage Lane and dine at the aptly named nightly ‘Feast of Kings’ an all you can eat feast with a medieval style theme.
Alongside this there is also the chance for the wannabe Michelin star chefs to undertake 45-minute-long training sessions with the celebrity chefs or make yourself extremely popular at home by undergoing a desert training course, which combined with the wine tasting and gin bar and the adult inflatable playground on offer means that the Great Food Festival gives you a chance to not only experience the volume of entertainment that Sentosa offers but most importantly explore a true food journey.
When: The Great food festival takes place over the course of four days, usually on the last weekend of September.
Where: The Great food Festival takes place at the Resorts World on the Island of Sentosa which is part of Singapore, and also home to Universal Studios, Bungee Jumping and the beaches which make up the southernmost point of Asia – you can expect the majority of the food festival to take place in the Resorts world convention Center.
Duration: The food festival lasts for four days, with the Star Chef Arena open during the day with not maximum time limit to attend and the Feast of Kings taking place each evening, for the training sessions which last 45 minutes and take place across the last two days of the festival it’s advised to check the schedule from the more information section below and book well in advance.
Tickets: Entry to the Star Chef Arena is normally free – but it’s advised to budget at least $100 SGD to make sure you get to sample some of the delights on offer with prices tending to start from $10, for the ‘Feast of Kings’ and ‘Connoisseur Collection’ you’ll need to apply in advance and register your interest at [www.tgff.com.sg] with only a select number of people allowed entry into the feasts.
Alternatively, there is also the Food festival experience pack at $50 which includes all day access to the chef training, free parking and $45 dollars’ worth of food vouchers for the festival again available at [www.tgff.com.sg].
Need to Know: Singapore is incredible safe and a great country to visit – but be mindful of the average 29c temperatures across the day (the venues and MRT have air conditioning) so it’s advised to bring a good amount of sun block and also be prepared for the occasional tropical storm.
Singapore and especially Sentosa can also be a little pricey, but given the size of the country it’s advised to stay outside of Sentosa and commute in to the festival (roughly 20 minutes and connected by all major transport hubs) so that you can have a little bit more money to indulge your taste buds at the festival.
For those who just can’t get enough of food the famous $3.50 Michelin star chicken rice is available in Singapore’s Chinatown at the Liao Fan Hawker Chan.
